As the crowd left Toronto's Ridley Aquarium there was a tangible cheer in the air. I don’t believe it was the result of the impressive array of quite well-prepared dishes or the ample supply of adult beverages, nor do I think the palpable sense of amiability was driven entirely by the exotic and beautifully presented sea life or the mermaid-costumed aerialist performing above the horseshoe crab petting tank…
For over two decades, Terminal Emulation (TE) has been the go-to technology for connecting mobile devices in a fast and reliable manner to server-side, mission-critical applications. In recent years, however, enterprises have been searching for applications with a more modern, intuitive, and graphics-rich user experience. There has been an effort to replace TE with newer technologies, but these web-based and fat-client applications, unfortunately, introduce great risk, expense and significant performance and latency issues to business processes.
Come see Justin Griffith, StayLinked VP of Product Management, discuss the evolution of wireless terminal emulation technology from the early days of device-side TE to modern, server-side technology, to today's dynamic screen transformation capabilities for smartphones.
Terminal emulation remains the most implemented and fastest application deployed on ruggedized mobile devices in wireless environments. It is estimated that 70% of ruggedized mobile devices run a terminal emulation solution. But for today’s touchscreen devices the market is demanding a rich and familiar user experience without sacrificing the speed, security and/or reliability of Terminal Emulation. Unfortunately, there are no new technologies to meet these requirements. Customers seem to be faced with a choice between the speed of terminal emulation and the good looks of browser-based or fat applications.

One of the biggest productivity killers in the warehouse occurs when wireless barcode scanners lose their connections to the mission-critical applications they rely on to do their jobs. The result is that the worker cannot do their job until the dropped session problem is resolved. Other serious ramifications of dropped sessions are lost data, poor employee morale, and the need for additional mobile device inventory and support staff. This blog post will discuss the causes costs of dropped sessions.
